About Placement Testing
The placement test determines where a new student will start coursework at NCC. It includes sections on math and English. The placement test results are used to help NCC determine which class will best meet your needs.
Please bring one of the following accepted forms of identification:
NCC Student ID, or other student identification
Driver’s License
Passport
Other form of government-issued ID
- The test is self-paced, untimed, and multiple-choice. It is not a pass/fail test.
- The placement test consists of English and Math questions.
- Students will be given a Math formula sheet, scratch paper, pencils, and calculators to use during the test. Personal calculators are not allowed.
- The test may take up to three hours per section.
- Students will be given the option to complete each section of the test broken down into multiple sections.
- The placement test scores are valid for 10 years.
- Students must earn a 70 on each test to advance to the next test.
- Once your test is completed, you will receive a printed score report.

Inside the Tests
Reading Test
The Reading test assesses your ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts. Passages on the test cover a range of content areas, writing modes, and complexities. Both single and paired passages are included.
Writing Test
The Writing test evaluates your ability to revise and edit multi-paragraph text.
Math Tests
The Arithmetic test focuses on computation, order of operations, estimation and rounding, comparing and ordering values in different formats, and recognizing equivalent values across formats. The Arithmetic test assesses the following knowledge and skills:

- Number Comparisons and Equivalents
The Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) test assesses the following knowledge and skills:
- Rational Numbers
- Ratio and Proportional Relationships

- Linear Equations
- Linear Applications and Graphs
- Probability Sets
- Descriptive Statistics
- Geometry Concepts
The Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF) test assesses the following knowledge and skills:

- Quadratics
- Functions
- Radical and Rational Equations
- Polynomial Equations
- Exponential and Logarithmic Equations
