Nash Community College President Dr. Lew K. Hunnicutt hosted his annual Legislative Breakfast last week, welcoming federal, state and local officials to campus for an update on the college’s progress, priorities and needs for the coming year.
Representatives from North Carolina’s federal delegation attended, including members of Congressman Don Davis’ office, Senator Thom Tillis’ office and Senator Ted Budd’s office.
At the state level, attendees included North Carolina State Representative Dante Pittman and NC State Senator Lisa Barnes, along with a representative from the office of NC State Representative Allen Chesser. College leadership and Board of Trustees members were also invited.
During this event, attendees got the opportunity to hear from several student leaders and their impactful stories around their experiences at NCC. This includes representation from the Student Government Association, SkillsUSA, and the Ambassadors program. Highlights include, SGA President and Student Trustee, Ethan Ward, speaking on how NCC has provided him with opportunities to learn more about the field of study he’s interested in and the opportunity to work with key figures on campus.
During the event, Dr. Hunnicutt delivered a comprehensive state of the institution presentation, highlighting enrollment trends, student success initiatives, workforce development partnerships and major academic and capital priorities. He also shared updates on NCC’s role in supporting regional economic mobility and workforce readiness.
In addition to institutional progress, Dr. Hunnicutt outlined several key funding requests and provided legislators with insight into the college’s operational needs, programmatic expansion opportunities and ongoing efforts to meet workforce demands across Nash and surrounding counties.
“This breakfast each year is an opportunity to connect our elected leaders with the real work happening every day at NCC,” Dr. Hunnicutt said. “Their support is essential as we continue building pathways that strengthen our workforce, expand access to high-quality education and serve the communities that depend on us.”
NCC hosts its Legislative Breakfast each year to foster communication with policymakers, share updates on institutional impact and ensure alignment between community needs and state and federal support.
