This year’s gift brings the Rotary Club’s lifetime giving to NCC to $240,000 since the first donation in 2016. Through this continued partnership, 258 Nash Community College students have received scholarship assistance since 2018, averaging more than 32 scholars per year.

The Tackle the Tar 5K Obstacle Course Race and Family Fun Day, hosted annually in Rocky Mount, raises funds to support local college scholarships and help area students achieve their higher education goals. Proceeds benefit NCC, Edgecombe Community College, and North Carolina Wesleyan University.

“NCC is deeply grateful for the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount’s ongoing investment in our students,” said Dr. Lew Hunnicutt, president of NCC and member of the Rotary Club. “Their support through Tackle the Tar makes a lasting difference. It opens doors for hundreds of students to continue their education, improve their lives and contribute to our community’s future workforce.”

“The Rocky Mount Rotary’s dedication to community and services shines through Tackle the Tar,” said Kari Young, executive director of NCC Foundation. “Being a recipient organization of this incredible event amplifies the work that both Rocky Mount Rotary and NCC do in the community – a wonderful partnership with deep, lasting impact.”

For many recipients, the scholarship represents more than just financial assistance – it’s an opportunity to achieve their dreams and build a better future. One recent awardee shared how the Rotary’s generosity has personally impacted their journey.

“I am deeply honored and grateful to be selected as a recipient of the 2025–26 Rocky Mount Rotary Open Door Scholars scholarship,” said Kiana, current NCC student. “This generous support will make a meaningful difference in my academic journey, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and pursue my degree with greater confidence.”

The Rotary Club of Rocky Mount launched Tackle the Tar in 2016 to create a fun, community-based event that directly funds educational opportunities for local students. Since its inception, the initiative has grown into one of the region’s most successful charitable events, combining service, fitness and philanthropy to change lives through education.

This year, the event raised over $720,000.
